Discord MCP

Connect Claude or ChatGPT to Discord with a Bot You Own

Give Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, and other MCP clients a consent-first way to search, post, reply, thread, react, and poll in Discord through your own Archivist companion bot.

Not the official Archivist bot. Not a user token. Not a mysterious little creature living in your DMs.

Find the useful bit

Search messages, pins, threads, reactions, and attachments available to your bot. No archaeology degree required.

Post the finished work

Send or edit messages, reply, start threads, react, attach files, and create polls through your bot.

Know the server

Look up channels, members, roles, invites, scheduled events, emojis, and other server context your bot can access.

Pair memory with delivery

Use Archivist Campaign MCP for the campaign record, then Discord MCP to post a recap, quote, handout, or deeply unfortunate hero award.

The important distinction

Campaign Memory and Discord Access Are Separate

Archivist Campaign MCP

Works with structured campaign data inside Archivist: sessions, characters, quests, journals, lore, moments, and campaign updates.

Discord MCP

Brings Discord channels and messages into your AI client, then posts and organizes through the bot you select. It does not write to Archivist campaign memory.

Why Discord MCP Uses Your Bot

An Archivist companion bot is a Discord bot you create and connect to Archivist. It can record an additional simultaneous live session and serve as the Discord identity and permission boundary for the hosted Discord MCP.

You control the connection, not Archivist. Discord MCP only acts when your AI client requests an enabled tool. It does not continuously monitor Discord or add Discord messages to Archivist campaign memory.

You create the bot

You make the Discord application, hold its token, and register it in your Archivist account.

You choose its reach

Discord channel permissions decide where the bot can see and act. Private stays private unless you invite the bot in.

You select it during OAuth

The consent screen asks which companion bot Discord MCP may use. The official Archivist bot does not appear.

You approve its tools

Your AI client controls which Discord tools are enabled and when an action needs your approval.

Setup

How to Connect Discord MCP

  1. 1For Claude Desktop, install Archivist Nexus and choose Discord MCP. For ChatGPT, add https://discord.myarchivist.ai/mcp in developer mode. Other compatible clients can use the same endpoint in their MCP settings.
  2. 2In the Discord Developer Portal, create an application, add a Bot user, and copy its bot token.
  3. 3Enable the Message Content privileged intent. Enable Server Members too if you want reliable member search.
  4. 4In Archivist, open Profile, then Discord, then Add companion bot. Paste the token and save it.
  5. 5Choose Add to Discord and invite that bot to each server it should work in. Re-invite older companion bots to add message permissions.
  6. 6Return to your AI client, complete Discord MCP OAuth, and select that companion bot on the consent screen.
Message Content matters. Without that Discord intent, message reads and searches return mostly empty payloads. The bot is technically present and practically unhelpful, which is a poor build.

TTRPG Workflows Worth Trying

Use Campaign MCP to draft a recap, then have Discord MCP post it in the campaign channel.
Find a rules discussion in Discord, compare it with campaign history, and reply in a fresh thread.
Pull a hero award from the last session and post it to Discord. Your players made their choices.

Discord MCP FAQ

Does Discord MCP use my Discord user account?

No. It uses a Discord bot token. User tokens and self-bots are rejected.

Can it see every channel in my server?

No. It follows the selected bot's Discord permissions. If the bot cannot view a channel, Discord MCP cannot view it either.

Why can't I select the official Archivist bot?

That separation keeps the connection under your control. Discord MCP only works with a companion bot you create, install, configure, and choose during consent. The official bot keeps its existing Archivist duties.

Do I need Archivist Campaign MCP too?

Not for Discord-only work. Add Campaign MCP when you want Claude, ChatGPT, or another AI client to use structured session history, characters, quests, journals, or other Archivist campaign data in the same workflow.

Can I connect without Nexus?

Yes. ChatGPT users and advanced users of other compatible clients can add https://discord.myarchivist.ai/mcp directly and complete OAuth in Archivist. Nexus is the guided Claude Desktop path.
